how to make a floral wreath

Learn how to make your very own floral wreath with us to don on your door or gift to a loved one. In the images used, I am making a Christmas wreath; however, the same method can be made for Spring, Summer and Autumn wreaths too.

What you will need to make your floral wreath:

  • A wreath base – I always choose wicker/ wooden when working with faux flowers as the wire holds easier. These are a great example
  • Floral wire – this comes in a variety of thicknesses, but I have linked the one I use here
  • A good selection of foliage – around 40 stems
  • A selection of faux florals – go from monochrome, or choose a colour palatte
  • A pair of wire cutters
  • Optional: Accessories, for example baubles, pine cones or small pumpkins

Let’s make our floral wreath:

1. Trim your foliage between 10 and 15cm

2. Bunch your foliage – put 2 to 3 pieces together and wrap the wire around the stems tightly 3 times.

3. Create around 20-25 bunches, following step 2, using a mix of foliage. Each bunch will be different.

3. Add your bunches of foliage to your wreath. Add one bunch at a time, wrapping wire around the bunch and the wreath 3 times.
Do not cut the wire until you have attached all the bunches to your wreath.
Make sure all the bunches are pointing in the same direction and are wired tightly.

4. Every 3 to 4 bunches, add a faux flower. Ensure that these are evenly spaced throughout your wreath, but they can face different directions to add interest.

5. When you have added all your foliage, wrap the wire around the last bunch 3 times, cut it and stick it into the back of the wreath.

6. Optional Step: Wire your accessories before adding them to the wreath.

The wire goes in between the gaps in the pine cone and wraps all the way around.
The wire goes through the whole in the top of the baubles. The wraps around the neck of the faux berries.

7. Optional Step: Add your accessories to your wreath. Lift up the foliage and wrap the wired accessories around your wreath, as if it is ‘hugging’ the wreath. Twist the wire at the back to secure.
